As you may have noticed, I have been quiet on the baking front over the last month. Over the last month I have been taking a cake decorating class at Gloria’s Cake and Candy Supplies.
In the class I learned how to pipe petals, leaves, roses, shell borders, rope borders, basket weave, letters, and how to do crumb coats.
Here is the first cake I did, a sunflower cake:
The second cake, a book cake with a Winnie the Pooh quote:
Here are the flowers I piped for the flower basket cake:
and here is the cake!
Some good pointers I learned in the class about making your frosting:
- If you live in a hot place, switch from butter to shortening so that your frosting doesn’t melt while piping.
- For a pure white frosting, switch to shortening and use vanilla butter instead of plain vanilla
- Don’t fill up the piping bag too much so it’s easier to handle while piping
- If your frosting is a little droopy add more powdered sugar
I will be making some 4th of July cupcakes in an attempt to use my new piping skills and will post them later.
